Hunter records its third death, 24 COVID-19 cases

A man in his 60's has died with COVID-19 in the John Hunter Hospital overnight, making him the Hunter's third death since August 5.

24 new COVID cases were recorded across the region on Friday in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens, Singleton, Maitland and Glen Innes.

By suburb the new cases are from Wallsend 3, Elermore Vale 3, Mayfield 1, North Lambton 1, Bar Beach 1, Mayfield East 1, Toronto 2, Wangi Wangi 1, Balcolyn 1, Mount Hutton, Edgeworth 1, Glendale 1, Belmont South 1, Nelson Bay 1, Tanilba Bay 1, Singleton 2, Rutherford 1 & Glenn Innes 1.

Twelve of the new cases were infectious in the community. Five are under investigation. 14 are linked to current cases. 

Hunter New England Health says there are currently 417 close contacts in isolation, eleven people being cared for in hospital, including two in ICU.

A number of COVID exposure sites have been listed overnight including at Newcastle, Mayfield, Islington, Maitland, Kotara, Toronto and Wangi Wangi.

Anyone who attended the following venues at the specified dates and times is considered a casual contact and must get tested and isolate until a negative result is received.

  • Priceline Pharmacy, Mayfield on Saturday 4 September between 5:12pm - 5:30pm
  • Pumped Up Kicks, Islington on Wednesday 8 September between 11:55am - 12:20pm
  • Bunnings, Maitland on Thursday 9 September between 2:55pm - 3:10pm
  • Bunnings, Kotara on Friday 10 September between 3:50pm - 4:15pm
  • Simply Pharmacy, Toronto on Friday 10 September between 11am - 11:40am
  • IGA, Wangi Wangi
    • Thursday 9 September between 7:30pm - 7:40pm
    • Saturday 11 September between 3:15pm - 3:20pm
    • Sunday 12 September between 4:15pm - 4:25pm
