Beach patrol season begins, as temperature heats up

BY JARROD MELMETH

The flags are up this weekend across the Hunters 13 patrolled beaches this weekend, as our lifeguards resume regular patrols.

With COVID-19 restrictions keeping residents within their own local government areas, its important to know which beaches locals can head to as part of their exercise time.

Beachgoers are reminded that COVID safe rules do still apply on the sand with masks still a requirement when not exercising and social distancing to be practiced.

Team Leader Beach Lifeguards Lucas Samways says he urges beach users to use common sense during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Our community did a great job last summer of sticking to the rules while at the beach.

"Im confident they will be just as good this year.

"Lifeguards will definitely be reminding people to do the right thing and abide by the current public health order," Mr Samways said.

Lake Macquarie beaches including Redhead, Blacksmiths, Caves Beach and Catherine Hill Bay beaches will be patrolled from 9am to 5pm Monday to Sunday.

Newcastle beaches including Stockton, Bar Beach, Dixon Park, Nobby's and Merewether will be patrolled from 9am to 5:30pm Monday to Sunday, while Newcastle will have lifeguards on duty from 7am to 5:30pm Monday to Sunday.

At Port Stephens, locals can head to Burubi, Fingal and One Mile Beaches for a supervised dip from 9am to 5pm Monday to Sunday.

The beach season continues until Anzac Day 2022.
