Bushfires Threaten Homes In The Lower Hunter

 BY IAN CROUCH

More strike teams are heading to the Lower Hunter on Friday morning to relieve weary firefighters battling a huge bushfire near Cessnock.

Three separate fires joined to create a dangerous fast-moving fire which threatened the townships of Abermain, Kurri Kurri, South Weston and Pelaw Main.

The fire has burnt through more than 600 hectares leaving Teasdale Tyres at Weston in ruins along with a number of homes.

Although the fire is listed at Advice level, work is continuing to bring the blaze under control.

Inspector Ben Shepherd from the Rural Fire Service says the exact number of properties lost is yet to be determined.

"We have what we call building impact assessment teams. They'll move across the fire ground today just trying to establish what exactly has been lost," he said.

Six schools are closed on Friday due to the fire threat.

They include Abermain, KurriI Kurri, Edwards, Pelaw Main and Weston Public Schools as well as Stanford Merthyr Infants School.

Almost 1600 properties remain without power around Abermain, Weston, Sawyers Gully and Neath. Ausgrid hopes to have complex repairs competed by 10.00am on Friday.

Meanwhile, a fire which threatened homes at West Wallsend has also been downgraded to Advice level overnight and is now under control after burning through more than 60 hectares.

Many residents were forced to flee their homes but there are no reports of property damage.

Both the M1 Pacific Motorway and Leggetts Drive at Richmond Vale have re-opened to traffic.

Crews will again be on alert on Saturday, with an elevated fire risk expected.

Singleton Mother Kathleen Folbigg Has Her Convictions Quashed

BY OLIVIA DILLON

The NSW Court of Criminal Appeal has quashed Singleton mother Kathleen Folbigg's convictions over the deaths of her four children.

It comes after she was granted an unconditional pardon back in June, after having served almost 20 years in gaol.

She had been convicted of three counts of murder and one of manslaughter.

But, Justice Andrew Bell said new scientific evidence had brought to light reasonable doubt about her guilt, and it is appropriate she be acquitted.

Speaking outside the court, the 56-year-old said it's been a long time coming.

"For almost a quarter of a century, I faced disbelief and hostility.

I hoped and prayed that one day I would be able to stand here with my name cleared."

Justice Bell also noted how a Special Commission of Enquiry into Ms. Folbigg's case, heard it would be unreliable to rely on her diary entries as admissions of guilt.

She said there were legal avenues to prove her innocence back in 1999, and she never should have been put behind bars.

"Those books contained my private feelings which I wrote to myself. No one expects those types of things to be read by strangers, let alone opinionated on.

They took my words out of context and used them against me; they accused me of something I never wrote about, never did, and never would do.

I hope no one else will ever have to suffer what I have suffered," she said.

Council Stands Firm On Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Centre Site

 BY IAN CROUCH

Lake Macquarie Council is on a collision course with the state government over the future of the Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Centre.

Councillors voted on Monday night to support a motion to try to save the centre and demand the deed of agreement between Origin Energy and the NSW Office of Sport and Recreation be released.

The state government wants the site flattened amid concerns it could be threatened in the event of an unlikely major earthquake being triggered by the nearby coal ash dam.

This is despite work continuing on an Embankment Stabilisation Project which is due for completion next year.

Council will seek approval from Lands and Property Minister, Steve Kemper to refuse the DA to demolish the site, saying it would not be in the public interest, based on the following reasoning:

  • The loss of value of the existing infrastructure to the community in the absence of a proposed replacement facility.
  • The need for accessible and publicly operated recreation facilities for the Lake Macquarie area.
  • The loss of social capital generated by losing a publicly run facility to service all members of the community.
  • The absence of detail for the future use of the site.

  • The Myuna Bay Sport & Recreation Centre was closed without warning in 2019

Memorial Bench Seat Unveiled In Hamilton To Honour 21-Year-Old Mackenzie Anderson

BY OLIVIA DILLON

The mother of a young Newcastle woman who was murdered during an alleged domestic violence incident is calling for more to be done to protect other women and children from harm.

21-year-old Mackenzie Anderson was fatally stabbed in front of her young son at her unit in Mayfield on the 25th of March, 2022.

Her ex-partner has been charged with murder and remains before the courts.

A memorial bench was officially unveiled in Mackenzie's honour at Gregson Park in Hamilton this morning. (Monday the 11th of December, 2023).

Her mother Tabitha Acret, said change needs to come from the top and the bottom.

"My daughter's death garnered a lot of media attention and...it was quite overwhelming at the time, but that's how every death should have been be treated and not every death is treated like that; sometimes it's a small blurb, sometimes we don't hear much at all...and we count it," she said.

"That's not what I want; those families don't want their children forgotten, but we also just don't want to keep seeing it happen."

Ms. Acret is calling for both "upstream" and "downstream" approaches to violence, whereby charges and sentencing is tightened for offenders, and children are educated from a young age about right and wrong behaviors.

She hopes the seat will serve as a reminder about how much needs to be done in order to protect other women and children from violence.

"We just need to keep the conversation going."

Friends, family, Newcastle Councillors and local domestic violence services came together together to unveil the seat this morning, which can be found on the western boundary of the park, near the Samdon Street entrance.

If you or someone you know needs help, please call or text 1800 RESPECT.

Selfless actions of Hunter firefighter recognised by Fire Commissioner

BY LAUREN FREEMANTLE

A Hunter firefighter who lost his own home in a fierce bushfire has been recognised for his heroic efforts at a ceremony at Mayfield West Fire Station.

Steve Cox, a Senior Firefighter with Fire and Rescue NSW, was battling blazes at Kurri Kurri on October 16 when he received a call from neighbours saying his house at Givan, near Stroud, was ablaze.

The 60-year-old raced home as his wife, Lyne, gathered their dogs in the car and drove through flames to escape.

The intensity of the blaze meant Steve and Lyne's home was destroyed, along with the dozen Holden cars Steve had spent years restoring.

More than 700 hectares of bushland was scorched in the Girvan bushfire on October 16 and 17, 2023.

Despite the devastation of losing his home, Steve joined a local Rural Fire Service crew and helped to save three neighbouring properties from the bushfire.

Alongside his mother and wife, Steve was presented with replacement medals by Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner, Jeremy Fewtrell, recognising his heroism and broader 33-year career as a firefighter.

"Steve is the epitome of a selfless firefighter," Commissioner Fewtrell said.

"To disregard the destruction of everything you own to help others takes a special kind of person.

"We are very proud of Steve's courage and dedication to duty," he said.

Colleagues said replacing Steve's medals was the least they could do to help, as Steve focuses on rebuilding his home in the new year.

"I'm very proud to receive this gesture," Steve said.

"We'll go on to rebuild our lives but I never thought I'd see the likes of my fire medals again."

Well deserved: Senior Firefighter Steve Cox shakes hands with the FRNSW Commissioner, Jeremy Fewtrell.

Upper Hunter MP Will Continue To Fight For The Return Of The Regional Seniors Travel Card

BY OLIVIA GOELDNER

The State Member for Upper Hunter has said he will continue to fight for the reinstatement of the Regional Seniors Travel Card.

The $250 card provided a much-needed boost to the travel budget of seniors across the Hunter, allowing them to complete daily tasks like attending medical appointments or visiting family and friends.

The card has since been scrapped in the current NSW budget, leaving many feeling left behind.

Dave Layzell says a petition debate held on Monday advocating for the return of the vital resource was gagged in Parliament.

"At the end of the day, there is one Government in charge at the moment and they are the ones who make the decision on  the card and they are the ones who've decided to cut the card, so were saying to them 'reverse that decision' because it is a popular card that does a lot for the community."

He says he will continue to present the matter to Parliament next year, saying the needs of our seniors should no longer be ignored.

"The enormous good this card does for our community means that we will continue to fight for our seniors."

Additional University Places Added in Newcastle to Grow AUKUS Workforce

BY HOLLY FISHLOCK

Additional places in STEM courses will be open at the University of Newcastle next year, in a bid to help grow the skilled workforce required to deliver AUKUS nuclear-powered submarines.

The Albanese Government is investing $128 million to fund an additional 4,001 university places across Australia. In Newcastle, 140 places have been allocated.

These additional places will apply to 38 STEM-related courses, designed to attract more students to train in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Federal Member for Patterson Meryl Swanson said she's celebrating the move.

"I'm delighted to say that the Albanese Labor Government has funded 140 additional places at the University of Newcastle over the next four years for STEM related subjects such as mechanical engineering and chemical engineering," says MP Swanson.

Ms. Swanson says it is important to increase training in STEM-related fields, as careers in these industries in Newcastle are in high demand.

"It's incredibly important that we do grow the workforce that is needed for the AUKUS nuclear-powered submarines. In addition to that, it's also important that we constantly work with our businesses in the local area.

"The reason it's so important that we increase people taking up STEM courses is because that's where the jobs of the future in our region are going to lie. As a government we've recognised that, and that's why we've supported and funded these 140 places at Newcastle University over the next four years,," she said.

Eligible students are able to apply and commence studies for STEM courses from the beginning of 2024.

BY OLIVIA GOELDNER

A cheque for $1.3 million has been presented to Newcastle Council to assist with the expansion of the Newcastle Art Gallery.

The payment was drawn from the Art Gallery Redevelopment Fund, consisting of funds raised by various community donations over a decade, held by the Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation on behalf of the City of Newcastle.

Former Lady Mayoress Cathy Tate added, the expansion is a much-needed development.

"The best regional collection in Australia could not be denied an extended home; we've waited so long, but it is so wonderful to see the hoardings up and see the construction has started.

Newcastle Supercar Supporters Group Questions Motion To Remove Race Infrastructure

BY JACK SEYMOUR

The Newcastle Supercars Supporters Facebook group is questioning a motion set to be tabled for tomorrow night's City Council meeting which would effectively abandon any future races.

The proposal would see the removal of key infrastructure used in the East End for the Newcastle 500.

Group administrator Mitchell Griffin said a successful motion would go against comments made Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes and NSW Premier Chris Minns, praising the event's success and calling for an contract extension.

"We've seen Supercars come out and say they're open to a contract renewal. We've heard from the Premier who's keen for the event to go ahead and even back in September, the Lord Mayor said she'd be happy with a five year extension," he said.

"So it really does bring the question "Why shut the event off completely?" when there is the opportunity there to have those discussions and look at the potential of a much longer event should negotiation go ahead next year."

The motion notes the City's decision last month to support Cessnock's bid to host the V8's at the proposed Wine Country 500.
