Moderate To Major Flood Warning Issued For Hunter River At Muswellbrook, Denman And Downstream

 MODERATE FLOODING IS OCCURRING AT MUSWELLBROOK AND DENMAN

MAJOR FLOODING POSSIBLE AT SINGLETON SATURDAY NIGHT

MODERATE FLOODING POSSIBLE AT MAITLAND SUNDAY.

There is currently moderate flooding at Muswellbrook, where river levels peaked at 9.90 metres around midnight Friday, just below the major flood level. The main flood peak is now approaching Denman where river levels are expected to peak this morning, with moderate flooding.

Flood waters from the Upper Hunter will combine with large inflows from the Goulburn River and Wybong Creek. These flood flows are expected to cause moderate and possibly major flooding to develop at Singleton during Saturday afternoon into Sunday. Moderate flooding is possible at Maitland on Sunday.

Upper Hunter:

Moderate flooding is occurring at Muswellbrook and Denman. River levels along the Kingdon Ponds and Hunter River at Aberdeen have fallen below minor flood levels.

The Hunter River at Muswellbrook peaked at 9.90 metres around midnight Friday into Saturday and is currently at 8.63 metres and falling, with moderate flooding.

The Hunter River at Denman is expected to peak near 8.90 metres around 09:00 am Saturday, with moderate flooding.

Lower Hunter:

Moderate and possibly Major flooding is expected at Singleton. Moderate flooding is possible at Maitland.

The Hunter River at Singleton is expected to exceed the minor flood level (10.00 m) around midday Saturday. The river level is likely to exceed the moderate flood level (11.50 m) early Saturday evening and may reach the major flood level (13.00 m) overnight Saturday into Sunday. Further rises possible.

Here is the latest advice from the Bureau of Meteorology:

The Hunter River at Maitland (Belmore Bridge) is expected to exceed the minor flood level (5.90 m) around 11:00 am Saturday morning on the high tide. The river level may reach the moderate flood level (8.90 m) overnight Sunday into Monday. Further rises possible.

Man in 70's becomes latest Hunter COVID-19 fatality, as the region records 57 new cases

A man his has died in Maitland overnight with COVID-19. 

The man in his 70s, was being cared for in Maitland Hospital, was fully vaccinated and had significant underlying health issues.

The fatality comes as Hunter New England records 57 new local cases.

There are currently 833 active cases across the region, of which 19 are being cared for in hospital, including two in intensive care.

3,770 cases have been recorded across the local health district since August 5.

Horse rescued by emergency services in Hinton

A horse has been rescued by emergency services overnight in Hinton, near Morpeth, after becoming trapped against trees.

24-year-old Franklin, had slipped on mud and slid backwards down a slope where he became trapped against tress and branches.

A vet was called to the scene who safely sedated Franklin while an extrication plan was developed to get the horse free.  

Chainsaw operators were brought in to remove surrounding lantana bushes as crews got to work arranging straps, slides and skids as part of the SES's Large Animal Rescue Operations.

The slide was positioned beneath Franklin who was heavily sedated at this point. SES and NSW Rural Fire Service crews then worked together to move the 1/2 tonne horse onto the slide using ropes. Once on the slide, the slide was winched down the slope and onto the grassed area of the paddock.

The on-site vet then checked over Franklin before he was reunited with his owner.

Pair charged over Beresfield break and enter

A man and a woman will face court on Monday following an alleged aggravated break and enter in Beresfield overnight.

The pair allegedly forced their way into a home on Beresfield at about 1:50am on Monday, where a man, woman and 8 year old child were asleep.

The occupants were awoken to sounds of items being knocked over.

Police say no one was injured during the incident and the pair were arrested walking down Beresfield Road.

They were charged with aggravated break and enter and enter in company and were refused bail to appear in Maitland Local Court on Monday.

40 fresh COVID-19 infection in Hunter New England, as cases settle in north west

Calls Grow Louder for the Restoration of Morpeth Railway Station

 Following last months push from Councillor Mitchell Griffin for the restoration of Morpeth Railway Station, member for Maitland Jenny Aitchison has since followed suit. 

Joining with concerned local residents, Jenny Aitchison is calling for the NSW  Government to restore the recently listed heritage site.

Since the restoration of the site in 1988, it has since been left as a storage site for NSW Public Works.  

“The NSW Government’s failure to preserve this historic building shows a total disregard for the heritage of Morpeth and the amenity of the local community.”

In similarity to the refurbished Newcastle station, a major reason for the restoration is based on the cultural and historical significance of the site that the station could provide to both the Morpeth community and tourists to the area. 

"The Maitland Heritage Conservation Group and the Business Chamber have been working together for quite a long time now, to try and get action on this site."

"No one wants to seem to take responsibility for the care and uptake of it and it's a real problem." 

With 2021 as the bicentenary of the European settlement, locals are keen to see the site restored as an icon of Morpeth. 

"The Liberals and Nationals have neglected this important heritage site for over a decade and it needs to be restored."

103 COVID-19 cases recorded across the local health district, as authorities raise concerns about Moree gatherings

The Hunter New England Health district has recorded 103 new COVID-19 cases.

A large chunk of the new infections are from the Moree Plains, MidCoast and Port Stephens local government areas.

Health authorities have issued close contact alerts for two events in Moree last week, which they hold concerns about.

Across the district there are 904 active cases, of which 14 are in hospital, including four in intensive care.

54 fresh COVID-19 cases in the Hunter

54 new cases of COVID-19 have been announced in the Hunter on Friday.

The local health district has topped the states case numbers again.

Of the 856 active cases in the region, there are 17 being cared for in hospital, including four in intensive care.

36 of Friday's cases were infectious in the community, while 39 are linked to existing cases.

Hunter records another day of high COVID-19 cases, as active cases take a dive

It's another day of high COVID-19 case numbers for the Hunter with 79 announced on Thursday.

The Hunter New England Health District is the states largest source of COVID infections. In second is South Western Sydney with 51 new cases.

There are currently 838 active cases across the region, down from 1,010 on Wednesday. 21 of the active cases are being cared for in hospital, including four in intensive care.

Of Thursday's cases, 41 were infectious in the community, while 51 are linked to existing cases.

Health authorities say they're seeing  transmission occurring in indoor settings such as gyms and households, including in fully vaccinated people.

Almost one-third of states daily COVID-19 cases in the Hunter

83 new cases of COVID-19 have been announced for the Hunter today, making up almost one-third of the states cases.

There are currently 1,010 active cases across the region, of which 23 are in hospital, including five in intensive care.

Dr Marianne Gale from NSW Health says Raymond Terrace, Kurri Kurri, Cessnock Carrington and Mayfield are all among the suburbs with the highest case numbers in the state.

2,811 cases of COVID have been recorded since August 5.

49 new COVID-19 cases in the Hunter, as health authorities call out Kurri Kurri

49 new local COVID019 cases have been recorded across the Hunter, bringing the regions total since August 5 to 2,729.

There are currently 940 active cases across the region, of which 24 are in hospital, including six in intensive care.

Of Tuesday's 49 cases, 32 were infectious in the community, while 28 are linked to existing cases.

Dr Jeremy McAnulty from NSW Health is calling on residents in the Kurri Kurri area to come forward for testing due to a rise in cases.
