More Job Cuts for Stockton Centre Workers

BY MEGHAN RICHARDSON

More job cuts have been announced for almost 500 employees who are currently working at the Stockton, Tomaree and Kanangra disability centres.

The closure of these disability centres was announced in 2015 and initial reports noted that 126 nursing jobs would be terminated as the centres prepare to close down in 2020.

The number, however, has ballooned to include another 350 positions like doctors, kitchen hands, disability support workers and many more.

There are significant concerns that the job cuts will have a substantial effect on the 300 residents within the Stockton, Tomaree and Kanangra disability centres.

These 300 residents are being moved to 88 separate group homes next year and there are worries the job cuts will affect the move.

The NSW Labor government is appealing to the Berejiklian government to reconsider the huge cuts.

Shadow Minister for the Hunter and Member for Port Stephens, Kate Washington says these staff cuts will cause unnecessary upset.

"The closure of these disability centres has already caused a lot of stress for residents, families and staff." says Miss Washington.

Member for Newcastle, Tim Crakanthorp has also condemned the job cuts.

"I hoped Minister Ward would bring a fresh approach to disability issues, but instead he is delivering the same old Liberal agenda of cutting jobs and services," Mr Crakanthorp says.

This new job cut announcement is inconsistent with what the Liberal Party promised in March 2014 when the Minister for Disability Service, John Ajaka, told parliament:
“To address concerns held by some staff, I have met with representatives from the Stockland branches of the NSW Nurses Association and Public Service Association and I reiterate that this Government will provide continuing employment for all those who want it.”

These extra job cuts have angered staff and union members who are now unsure of their future.

The nurses’ unions, NSW Nurses and Midwives Association and the Public Service association, will be holding meetings shortly to measure the feelings and gauge the upset staff are feeling.

They say they are currently considering their options but feel the future is ‘bleak’.

The job cuts are rumoured to be caused by financial pressure of the NDIS, which initially promised more employment for disability workers when it was first introduced.

Hunter Drivers Urged to Drive Safe for Fatality Free Friday

BY JESSICA KRAUSE

To mark Fatality Free Friday, government officials and law enforcement are calling for safer driving and a reduction in fatal crashes throughout the Hunter and NSW.

160 people have died in road accidents this year in NSW, overtaking last years death toll by nine. 76 drivers, 25 motorcyclists and 29 passengers are among this total, with a higher swing towards male fatalities.

Assistant Commissioner of the NSW Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Michael Corboy says the statistics for young people are particularly sobering.

"Sadly, road trauma is the number one killer of Australian children aged 14 and under, and the second highest killer of young people under 24.

"Many family and friends... have had to suffer the tragedy of losing a loved one on our roads."

Drivers are being encouraged to sign the Road Safety Pledge, promising to practice good driving techniques such as wearing a seatbelt, looking out for other drivers and obeying road rules.

Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison says that safe driving is something everyone should think about.

"It is so important that, every time we get behind the wheel, we think hard about the potential consequences of our actions.

"We must all take responsibility."

People wanting to sign the Fatality Free Friday pledge can visit https://arsf.com.au/fatality-free-friday-2/

Newcastle Police Issue Warning About Phone Scam

BY IAN CROUCH

Newcastle Police are urging residents not to be taken in by a phone scam doing the rounds.

Scammers are calling claiming to be from the Tax Office or NSW Police, saying an outstanding bill or debt is owed and threatening the person with arrest unless it's paid immediately.

The calls appear to be genuine as the caller ID shows the number of the local police station.

Police say it is unclear how the scammers are utilising the actual number.

Police say neither the tax office or police call people to make demands for payment and we shouldn't be duped into passing over personal information or transferring money over the phone.

Police say the Australian Tax Office will never:
• threaten you with immediate arrest
• ask you to pay money to receive a refund or payment from us
• ask you to pay a debt via iTunes vouchers, or pre-paid credit card or store gift cards
• ask you to provide personal information, such as your tax file number (TFN) or credit card number, via email or SMS
• ask you to pay money into a personal bank account
• direct you to download files from the internet, or open attachments in unsolicited emails.

Further information can be found by clicking on the following link.
https://www.ato.gov.au/general/online-services/identity-security/verify-or-report-a-scam/

SCAMWATCH has provided the following advice on how to protect yourself.

Protect yourself:
• If you receive a phone call out of the blue from someone claiming to be a representative of Telstra and their call relates to a problem with your internet connection, just hang up.
• If you have doubts about the identity of any caller who claims to represent a business, organisation or government department, contact the body directly. Don’t rely on contact details provided by the person – find them through an independent source such as a phone book or online search.
• Remember that you can still receive scam calls even if you have a private number or have listed your number on the Australian Government’s Do Not Call Register (link is external). Scammers can obtain your number fraudulently or from anywhere it has been publicly listed such as in a phone book.
• Don’t let scammers press your buttons – scammers use detailed scripts to convince you that they’re the real deal and create a high-pressure situation to make a decision on the spot.
• Always keep your computer security up to date with anti-virus and anti-spyware software, and a good firewall. Only buy computer and anti-virus software from a reputable source.
• Never give your personal, credit card or online account details over the phone unless you made the call and the phone number came from a trusted source.
• Never give a stranger remote access to your computer, even if they claim to be from a reputable business.
• If you think your computer’s security has been compromised, use your security software to run a virus check. If you still have doubts, contact your anti-virus software provider or a computer specialist.
• If you think you have provided your account details to a scammer, contact your bank or financial institution immediately.

Report:
• If you have lost money as a result of this type of scam, please report the matter to your local Police Station.
• You can also report scams to the ACCC via SCAMWATCH or report a scam page or by calling 1300 795 995.

Program aims to Tackle Shortage of Women in the Property Industry

The Property Council of Australia’s, 'Girls in Property Program' has kicked off in the Hunter for the first time today.

Fifty female year nine students from Hunter River High and St Pius X High School in the Hunter, will be exploring the in’s and outs of the property industry, taking part in the program which brings together some of the biggest property companies in NSW.

The program aims to inspire more young girls to choose property as a career, with currently only 28% of leadership roles within the industry held by women.

The day hopes to inform young girls about the extremely diverse range of careers and roles available within the property sector.

"We really want to open up the conversation and talk to these girls about the myriad of different roles that they can access within the property industry," Mrs. Hugo said.

"It's not just about construction and it's not just about engineering. There are professional services, there's architecture, there's planning, there are so many different areas that they could be looking at and so many more opportunities if they just knew what was available"

During the day the girls will hear from women leaders in the property industry, develop real-life projects to represent their schools, and learn more about university education options related to property.

"Relative to other industries there's so much more room to grow in terms of participation in diversity and sometimes its a case of 'you don't know, what you don't know'," Mrs. Hugo said.

"Today they'll be talking to people about their journey and experiences and they'll start work on some really exciting processes that they need to be involved in."

Wallsend MP Addresses Parliament about Fence at Glendore Public School

BY HANNAH-LOUISE ANDERSON

State Member for Wallsend Sonia Hornery will address parliament today and request that the long-awaited security fence for Glendore Public School is built as soon as possible as it "isn't secure" for the staff or the students.

The school which has been broken into three times since November last year has experienced $100 000 dollars worth of damage and can no longer afford to fix the property that is continuously damaged or to clean-up the vandalism that occurs. Glendore is the only school in the area yet to receive a security fence.

"This is the only school in the area that doesn't have a security perimeter fence and it's the only school being broken into and vandalized," says Ms. Hornery, "the community and school are sick and tired of having to replace items on a regular basis with anyone free to roam through the school grounds."

Five-hundred concerned parents have signed a petition calling on the Minister for Education to prioritize building the school a fence so that the students of Glendore Public can feel safe and secure when trying to learn.

"I am hopeful that now we have a new Minister, that the government might be willing to listen to the community concerns," claimed Ms. Hornery, "the school isn't secure and a perimeter fence around the school would really help that."

Hunter Residents Koalified to Report Wildlife Sightings

BY LILLY HAINES

NSW communities are being asked to share where they have seen wildlife in their local area as a new online Community Wildlife Survey launched yesterday.

The survey, conducted by the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH), asks local people to record sightings of ten key animals wherever they have been sighted across NSW in the last two years.

The survey is being funded as a part of the $44.7 million NSW Koala Strategy which is helping to secure the future of koalas in the wild.

Koala populations around the Hunter have been in decline over recent years in some areas and the NSW Koala Strategy also provides funding to set aside more than 20 000 hectares of state forest in NSW regions including the Hunter.

Port Stephens is the home to the largest population in the Hunter and even their numbers are decreasing dramatically with reports forecasting the extinction of the NSW koala population by 2050 without intervention.

Science Director of the OEH, Dr. Tom Celebrezze, said the survey is collecting data on the populations of brushtail possums, foxes, platypus, wombats, koalas, spotted-tailed quolls, kangaroos, deer, and dingos.

"One great thing about using citizen scientists and local volunteers is that they're everywhere so this approach using people's eye witness accounts means we have millions of eyes looking for ten different common animals and that gives us some baseline information about where those animals are being seen," Mr Celebrezze said.

"This means that we then get data about these species that informs a whole range of programs and research, knowing where koalas are being seen so we know where the populations are located means that we can add that [information] to the many different programs we are doing looking at koalas," said Mr Celebrezze.

The OEH says community wildlife sightings are hugely valuable to researchers with the data from the survey helping to gain a better understanding of where wildlife is as well as information on their health and any threats to the animals.

The last survey was conducted by the OEH in 2006 when more than 16 000 people shared their wildlife sightings which helped shape research and conservation priorities for NSW, and this new survey hopes gather data showing how populations have changed in over ten years.

"We just really encourage everyone to get involved, maybe you have been on a family trip and your kids have seen an animal and maybe it's a good opportunity for them to learn more about science and how they can get involved in conservation," Mr Celebrezze said.

The Community Wildlife Survey can be accessed here.

Hunter Levels of Sulphur-Dioxide Pollution Exceed World Health Organisation Standards

BY HOLLIE HUGHES

Tests carried out over four years by the Nature Conservation Council reveal areas in Newcastle and the Hunter exceed World Health Organisation standards for Sulphur-Dioxide (SO2) pollution.

Sulphur-Dioxide gas is primarily released from coal-fired power stations, fossil fuel burning and vehicle emissions.

The Nature Conservation Council undertook air quality testing in parts of the Hunter, Newcastle and Sydney from May 2015 to the same time this year say Newcastle and the Hunter were the most polluted test areas.

Nature Conservation Council Campaign Director Dr. Brad Smiths says levels of SO2 in the air around Carrington, Stockton and Mayfield are the highest polluted which can impact negatively on communities,

"People with asthma, allergies and the elderly are the most impacted by the pollution although high SO2 levels are also linked to pregnancy issues including low-birth weight in newborns, respiratory disease and premature death."

The Nature Conservation Council is calling on the state and federal governments to raise national emissions standards to match those set internationally and force compliance from coal-fired companies,

"The Australian standard set for SO2 pollution is 11 times weaker than those recommended by the World Health Organisation guidelines and the government needs to bring our standards up to scratch and protect our right to breathe in healthy air."

Erosion Concerns at Jimmy's Beach

BY HANNAH-LOUISE ANDERSON AND CATHERINE ALLEN

The newly installed $4.1 million Sand Transfer System (STS) at Jimmy's Beach in Hawks Nest is experiencing technical difficulties and has ceased operating in the area.

Issues with its flow meter device have left the STS with pipe blockages and potential infrastructure exposure.

The device itself, originally designed to combat weather-induced erosion, was not a popular choice with local residents and members of the Winda Woppa Association who felt there were better ways to combat the sand degradation.

President of the Winda Woppa Association Ken Garrard says they need to work towards a more permanent solution.

"We have been talking to the council and all of the other stakeholders for some time now that the Sand Transfer System is purely a band-aid solution, that there is no proof that it will work, that we want a permanent solution." says Mr. Garrard, "We have even suggested what components might make a permanent solution, however, we haven't been successful in convincing anybody yet."

Mr. Garrard is calling on members of the community to pressurize local government and ensure that a long-term, permanent solution is found.

Hunter Water Levels Lowest in 13 Years

BY KAYNE STEPHENS AND MADELAINE MCNEILL

Drinking water will soon be drawn from the Tomago Sandbeds to fill a shortfall in the Hunter as water levels drop to their lowest in 13 years.

The sandbeds are part of the Lower Hunter's drought response systems and can provide 20 per cent of the region's drinking water when needed.

Hunter Water's Chief Investment Officer Darren Cleary says the water source is safe and is only used as a backup due to higher costs involved in treating the water.

Water from the sandbeds can be discoloured due to higher levels of difficult-to-remove iron and mineral manganese, but Darren Cleary says discoloured water doesn't pose a health risk and residents can try turning their tap on full for a few minutes to clear the pipes.

"We've got extensive water quality testing throughout the borefields to demonstrate that the water we're drawing from Tomago aquifer is safe to drink, and importantly we are not drawing any water from the Williamtown Management Area," said Mr Cleary.

"Our customers can have confidence in the controls that have been put in place to ensure their drinking water remains safe and meets the Guidelines."

Hunter Water will begin drawing water from the Tomago Sandbeds from Monday, June 3rd.

Labor Pledges More Funding for UoN

BY CATHERINE ALLEN

Newcastle MP Sharon Claydon joined staff and students from the University of Newcastle to announce the Labor party's plans to invest $750,000 into student enabling programs both locally and nationally.

"The University of Newcastle is a national leader in enabling programs, having provided more than 60,000 students with an experience of university, resulting in many becoming the first in their family to go to university," said Ms Claydon.

The funding boost is earmarked for two programs designed to increase participation in higher education.

$500,000 of the funding will go towards the development of an online 'navigator resource' aimed at smoothing the prospective students' transition into university life.

"This four-week online navigator resource will be available nationally to give prospective students from a diverse range of backgrounds information about these alternative pathways to university,"

"It will allow people considering higher education to understand the pathways available in order to improve the access, retention and educational outcomes of diverse cohorts of people."

The remaining $250,000 is committed to supporting a pilot program offering students additional time with staff and support for regional students across the Hunter region.

"It can be hard for students in rural and regional communities to manage the challenges of study, work and family life when they live so far from campus," said Sharon Claydon.

"The funding will boost student outcomes by allowing them to engage face-to-face with university staff closer to home."

Astra Aerolab Officially Underway

BY MADELAINE MCNEILL

Newcastle Airport's Astra Aerolab precinct is a step closer to reality, with construction now officially underway and a new lease agreement signed with a major contractor.

Deputy Premier John Barilaro used an excavator to turn the first sod at Williamtown this morning, watched on by Airport CEO Dr Peter Cock, Chairman Peter Gesling, Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes and Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer and MP Kate Washington.

Andrew Chapman, Aircraft Sustainment General Manager for BAE Systems Australia, also made an appearance with the Airport announcing today it has signed an agreement with the major defence contractor allowing it to lease land on the 76-hectare site.

Dr Peter Cock said the new agreement signifies an exciting milestone for the project.

“BAE Systems Australia is the nation’s largest defence and security company, so the importance of this signing cannot be overestimated,” he said.

“BAE’s presence will not only attract further jobs and investment but help ensure we develop the world-class defence and aerospace precinct that our region deserves.”

Last year, the Deputy Premier announced a grant of $11.7 million dollars to kickstarts the project's development.

“I am thrilled this precinct will allow aviation companies to quickly establish themselves at this new location and get on with the job of supporting Royal Australian Air Force combat aircraft, including the F-35A Joint Strike Fighter,” said Mr Barilaro.

“By funding the Astra Aerolab precinct, we are helping to create jobs for aerospace engineers, aviation, IT and avionics specialists and attracting workers to the Hunter region.

“I want to thank Newcastle Airport, the City of Newcastle and Port Stephens Council for their hard work and commitment to making this precinct a reality,” he said.

Labor's Commitment to Little Beach Boat Ramp

BY HANNAH-LOUISE ANDERSON

Plans for a $1.4 million dollar update to the Little Beach boat ramp in Port Stephen's have been announced as part of the Labor party's overall commitment to improving the safety of boats ramps, pontoons and jetties throughout Australia.

Little Beach ramp has become an issue for those who visit the area and a source of frustration for the local community.Reports have been made to council on behalf of motorists experiencing burnt-out clutches, cars inundated with water and smoking tyres, as well as cases where vehicles have drifted into the sea. The cause of these issues is an accumulation of sand on top of the ramp said to be arriving from the nearby Shoal Bay.

"Under the labor government we are going to extend and elevate the boat ramp so that the sand will be able to move around freely underneath it." says Paterson MP Meryl Swanson.

The upgrades will supposedly save Port Stephens Council $50 000 dollars per year, the sum of which has previously been spent annually on removing the six thousand tonnes worth of sand that accumulates throughout the year.

This announcement comes as part of Labor's $55.5 million dollars commitment to Australia's recreational boaters, jet skiers and water-motorists.
