Police Investigate Suspicious Unit Fire At Bar Beach

Fire has caused extensive damage to a unit at Bar Beach overnight.

Eight fire trucks were called to a multi-unit complex on Light Street at 7.20pm on Thursday 9 April 2026 to find a top floor unit on fire.

Newcastle Fire Command says the occupants of the unit were accounted for and all residents of the complex were safely evacuated.

It took crews about an hour to douse the flames.

Police are treating the fire as suspicious.

Forensic officers and fire investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.

 

BREAKING! Fire Tears Through Hamilton South Unit

Fire has caused extensive damage to a unit at Hamilton South early this morning.

Newcastle Fire Command says they were initially called to reports of a bin fire in the three level Department of Housing complex in Fowler Street just before 3.00am.

A crew from Merewether arrived to find a ground floor unit on fire.

All residents of the complex were safely evacuated without injury.

Six fire trucks responded to the incident with crews taking about 10 minutes to bring the blaze under control. 

The cause of the fire is not known but police are not treating it as suspicious.

 

BREAKING! Fire Engulfs Unit At Mayfield

One person has been treated for smoke inhalation after fire engulfed a unit at Mayfield overnight.

Emergency services were called to a two storey apartment complex in Hanbury Street just after 10.30pm on Thursday 5 February 2026 to find one of the units well alight.

Newcastle Fire Command says 7 fire trucks, a ladder platform and 2 support vehicles were deployed to the fire, taking about 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control.

All the residents of the Department of Housing complex were safely evacuated and one person was treated at the scene by paramedics.

It's understood the fire started in the kitchen of the unit.

Crews took around 90 minutes to fully extinguish the fire which was contained to the one unit.

 

BREAKING! Four People Jump For Their Lives After Fire Engulfs Cooks Hill Unit

Four people have jumped from the third floor after fire engulfed a unit at Cooks Hill overnight.

Around 40 firefighters from six stations and the Hazmat Unit were called to the 3 storey unit block on Parkway Avenue just after 10.30pm on Tuesday November 16 to find a ground floor unit engulfed in flames and several people on the ground suffering various injuries.

They'd broken a window of a top floor unit to escape the intense heat and smoke which was coming through their front door.

Newcastle Fire Command says crews had the fire under control within half an hour and fully extinguished by around 12.30am on Wednesday, with the blaze confined to the one unit 

Four people were taken to the John Hunter Hospital with suspected fractures and orthopaedic injures.

A fifth person was rescued from a second storey unit by firefighters using a ladder and taken to hospital suffering smoke inhalation.

12 people were evacuated from the unit block.

Police have set up a crime scene and forensic police will commence their investigation on Wednedsay morning.

 

Police Investigate Unit Fire At Jesmond

Fire has destroyed a unit at Jesmond overnight.

Firefighters were called to a two storey six unit complex in Harvard Close just before 1.00am today (Wednesday 10 September, 2025) to find unit 4 engulfed in flames.

Newcastle Fire Command says the occupants of all the units were safely evacuated and no-one was injured.

Around 30 firefighters took more than an hour to bring the blaze under control.

Two neighbouring units also sustained structural damage.

Police have set up a crime scene as investigations continue into the cause of the fire. 

 

Police Investigate Suspicious Unit Fire At Newcastle East

Police are treating a fire which destroyed a unit in Newcastle East on Tuesday night as suspicious.

14 Firefighters from three stations were called to the Department of Housing complex on Nobbys Road just before 8.00pm to find an unoccupied sub-ground unit on fire.

Around 20 residents were evacuated from the complex and no-one was injured.

It took crews about 20 minutes to get the fire under control and prevent from spreading to other units.

It's the same unit complex where a man tragically died in a unit fire in March this year.

 

 

Firefighters Called To Unit Fire At Maitland

Firefighters have contained a unit fire at Maitland.

Crews from East Maitland, Maitland and Rutherford were called to Bourke Street at about 4.45am on Tuesday to find two separate fires had broken out at a mixed commercial and residential premises.

Newcastle Fire Command says all the occupants have been safely evacuated without injury.

Police are treating the fire as suspicious.

BREAKING! Unit Fire: Cooks Hill Apartment Complex Evacuated

Fire has forced the evacuation of a unit block at Cooks Hill.

Newcastle Fire Command says crews from Newcastle, Merewether and Carrington were called to the 3 storey unit complex in Darby Street at about 5.10am on Thursday 6 June,2024 to find a fire in a ground floor unit.

They've managed to contain the blaze to the one apartment and there are no reports of injuries.

It's understood the unit was unoccupied when the fire broke out.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.

Residents Evacuated From Nelson Bay Unit Block

Fire has forced the evacuation of a block on units at Nelson Bay early Wednesday morning.

Firefighters arrived at the three story unit complex on Magnus Street at 3.45am to find a large amount of smoke issuing from a top floor unit.

Newcastle Fire Command says the sole male occupant managed to escape thanks to a working smoke alarm.

Two other residents were evacuated from adjoining units and no-one was injured.

It's believed the fire started in a kitchen range hood and was quickly put out using CO2 extinguishers.

Firefighters from Newcastle have been sent to Taree where a multi-unit apartment block is on fire.

Newcastle Fire Command says 8 units from as far away as Coffs Harbour were called to the 12 unit 2 storey Department of Housing block on Ronald Road at about 1.30am on Thursday to find a fire in an upper level unit had spread to adjoining apartments.

The roof of the building has since collapsed.

40 people have been evacuated and one person suffered a suspected broken arm when they jumped from the second floor to escape the flames.

BREAKING! Dozens Evacuated As Hamilton South Unit Goes Up In Flames

Around 50 people have been evacuated after a fire broke out in a unit complex at Hamilton South.

Firefighters from five stations were called to the three storey Housing Commission units in Glebe Road just before 3.30am on Thursday to find a top floor unit on fire.

They took just over half an hour to bring the fire under control using hose lines inside the building.

Newcastle Fire Command says a firefighter suffered minor injuries when the ceiling of the unit partially collapsed, but crews managed to contain the fire to the unit of origin.

10 adjoining residents have not been able to return because their units sustained smoke and water damage.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.

BREAKING! 40 People Evacuated After Fire Breaks Out In Raymond Terrace Unit

Dozens of people have been evacuated after a fire broke out in Raymond Terrace unit overnight.

Fire crews from Raymond Terrace, Tarro and East Maitland along with the RFS were called to a 14 unit complex in Glenelg Street at 8.20pm on Tuesday to find a fire in the kitchen of one of the units.

A 50-year-old man suffered smoke inhalation and was treated by Paramedics before being taken to hospital.

Newcastle Fire Command says 40 residents were evacuated as a precaution.

Crews took about an hour to extinguish and mop up the fire, which was confined to the unit.

All residents have since been allowed to return to their homes.

BREAKING! Man Suffers Severe Burns In Cooks Hill Unit Fire

A 41-year-old man has been flown to Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital with severe burns after a unit fire at Cooks Hill.

Fire & Rescue NSW says crews were called to the Darby Street apartment complex at 6.47am on Thursday where a fire had engulfed two second floor units.

Residents assisted the injured man to safety and an off-duty nurse treated him before Ambulance paramedics arrived. 

It's believed an explosion sparked the blaze but Police say the cause is not yet known and a crime scene has been set up as investigations continue

Darby Street is closed between Bull and Parry Streets, while Dawson Street is also closed.

Police are urging members of the public to avoid the area.

Four People Evacuated As Jesmond Unit Goes Up In Flames

Four people have been evacuated after a fire tore through their Jesmond unit overnight.

Firefighters were called to a three level brick and tile unit complex in Mordue Parade just after 5.00pm on Thursday to find flames coming from a window of one of the units.

They took about half an hour to bring the blaze under control which caused severe damage to a bedroom.

Power to the complex has been isolated and residents forced to find alternative accommodation.

Newcastle Fire Command says no-one was injured during the incident.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire.

Two units have been destroyed in an early morning fire at Rutherford.

Eight fire trucks were called to the two storey apartment block in Churchill Crescent just before 2.00am on Wednesday to find the units well alight.

10 people were evacuated and one person wast treated at the scene.

It took crews two hours to extinguish the fire.

BREAKING! Woman Injured And Dog Killed In Wallsend Unit Fire

A woman has suffered burns to her hands while trying to rescue her dog from a unit fire at Wallsend.

Firefighters from Wallsend, Minmi and Mayfield West were called to Davis Street just before 3.00pm on Monday to find a large amount of black smoke coming from the unit.

Police say the occupants of the other units in the block were safely evacuated.

The injured woman was taken to hospital for treatment.

Sadly her dog died in the fire.

The unit was destroyed and the remaining apartments were damaged by smoke and water - police say those residents have not been able to return.

It took crews three hours to extinguish and mop up the fire.

It's understood a gas heater left on caused the fire.

Bellbird Home And Broadmeadow Unit Damaged In Overnight Fires

Firefighters have been kept busy overnight with major fires at Bellbird and Broadmeadow.

Five crews were called to a single story fibro and iron house on Tennant Street at Bellbird at 7.45pm on Sunday to find property well alight.

It took them about 2 hours to extinguish and mop up the fire, which left the home severely damaged.

Newcastle Fire Command says all occupants were accounted for and no-one was injured.

They were called back at 4.00am on Monday to extinguish a re-ignition.

Earlier, crews from Lambton and Newcastle including the aerial Bronto unit, were called to Belford Street at Broadmeadow at 5.45pm on Sunday to find a rear unit above the Little French Cafe on fire.

Residents in all 6 upstairs units were safely evacuated without injury.

Crews took more than 2 hours to douse the flames, which caused extensive damage to the rear unit.

Residents of two units were later allowed to return.

Units Damaged By Fire At Valentine

Police are yet to determine the cause of a fire which tore through a unit block at Valentine overnight.

Firefighters were called to the three level apartment complex in Berringar Road just after 4.00pm on Monday to find smoke issuing from the roof of the building.

The fire spread to three units in the complex, with around 80 firefighters from 8 stations taking 90 minutes to bring the blaze under control.

Crews wrapped up firefighting operations at about 8.00pm.

5 people were relocated from the units.

Crews were called back just after 2.00am on Tuesday to extinguish hot spots.

Police have kept a guard on the property through the night and investigators will arrive on Tuesday morning to determine how the fire started.

BREAKING! Elderly Man Rescued From Unit Fire At East Maitland

An elderly man has been rescued from a burning unit at East Maitland.

Newcastle Fire Command says crews from East Maitland and Rutherford arrived just before 10.00am on Wednesday to find smoke issuing from the first floor of the two storey unit block in George Street.

The residents of four units have been evacuated including a 95-year-old man who was removed from one of the apartments.

He's being treated by paramedics for minor smoke inhalation.

None of the other residents have been injured.

The fire started in the kitchen area of one of the units and caused significant damage.

Murrurundi Unit Fire: Residents Evacuated

The occupants of a unit complex at Murrurundi have been evacuated after a fire broke out overnight.

Fire crews from Murrurundi and Quirindi and the RFS were called to the complex in Victoria Street at about 11.00pm on Thursday night to find two units on fire.

They managed to extinguish the blaze before it could spread to other units.

7 people were safely evacuated and no-one was injured.

The cause of the fire is not yet determined but Police say it's not suspicious.
