Work Underway to Widen the Hexham Straight and Extend the M1 Pacific Highway to Raymond Terrace

BY OLIVIA DILLON

The Federal Transport Minister joined a number of Hunter MPs in the region on Tuesday the 26th of July to announce work to widen the Hexham Straight is now underway.

The project will see the dual carriageway along the the Pacific Highway between the Newcastle Inner City Bypass and Hexham Bridge widened from two lanes to three in each direction.

It will also involve the demolition of Ironbark Bridge to make way for two new bridges at Ironbark Creek.

Catherine King said the move will reduce traffic here in the Hunter, and allow motorists to travel from Sydney to Brisbane without encountering any traffic lights.

NSW Roads Minister John Graham also attended the announcement and says he expects thousands of jobs will be delivered for the Hunter over the course of the Hexham project, and the extension of the M1 Pacific Motorway out to Raymond Terrace.

He said the upgrade will deliver more reliable travel times for freight vehicles and commuters alike.

"This is a notorious bottleneck; motorists have queued here over generations as the Pacific Highway has become smoother and smoother, but the run has often ended here in congestion. That will cease when these works are delivered."

"It's great news for motorists right across NSW."

The Hexham upgrade is expected to be completed by 2026, and the M1 extension should be finished by 2028.

Labor Promises New High School in Medowie

BY OLIVIA DILLON

State Labor has said it will build a public high school in Medowie if it wins the March state election.

Land was set aside for the project on Ferodale Road forty years ago, but no government has followed through with plans since.

However, Opposition Education Spokeswoman Prue Car has announced, a NSW Labor government would commit $53 million to the project, and would commence work on the project in the first term of government.

The school would cater for up to 600 students initially and would be operational in four years.

Port Stephens MP Kate Washington, said it's something the community has been fighting for for generations.

"Medowie is a town of more than 10,000 people and growing. it has two independent high schools, but no public high school. The need has been there for a long time; everyone knows Medowie needs a public high school," she said.

In response to the pledge, Education Minister Sarah Mitchell, said Labor's commitment won't be enough to build a brand new high school.

However, Ms Washington, says it's about time a commitment was made.

"If she wants to quibble about the dollars, she should be putting a high school in Medowie and telling us how much she will fund it. Her solution is to squeeze more kids into the high schools in Raymond Terrace. That is the cheapest and nastiest solution for the families of Raymond Terrace and Medowie," Ms Washington said.

"The upcoming state election couldn't be clearer; if the families of Medowie want a public high school, they must vote for Labor, because only a Labor Government will deliver it."

Community calling for more time to consider Raymond Terrace development

BY DAKOTA TAIT

The Hunter and Central Coast Planning Panel is facing calls to extend the deadline for submissions on the proposed Kings Hill development north of Raymond Terrace.

There's concern, residents have had just a month to respond, especially in the leadup to the Christmas period.

Submissions close on Friday 9 December, but Greens MP Cate Faehrmann has written to the Planning Panel, calling for an extra month to Friday 20 January in the new year.

Environmental groups and locals have raised the alarm, the project could result in the destruction of 152 hectares of koala habitat.

Ms Faehrmann says she's worried the project is "being rushed through the planning system", and the community needs more time to digest and evaluate the development applications.
