Man Arrested After Early-Morning Standoff at Tenambit

 A 49-year-old man is in Police custody following a stand-off at Tenambit early today (Wednesday 11 February 2026).

Officers were called an address in O'Hearn Street at about 4.00am to reports of alleged AVO breaches.

Police say the man barricaded himself inside the home and refused to leave.

Specialist officers were called in and the man surrendered without incident about two hours later.

He's expected to be charged with allegedly breaching two AVOS, breach of bail and charges relating to this morning's incident.

 

Man Accused Of Firing Shots At Tenambit And Toronto Faces Court

A man accused of firing a sawn-off shot gun from a moving vehicle at Tenambit and Toronto has been ordered to undergo a mental health assessment.

Police allege 26-year-old Brandon Rogan fired the gun on three occasions in a public place including at Toronto where he filmed himself driving through the suburb at about 4.00pm on Sunday when he held the firearm out the window, pulled the trigger and then said "whoops".

Rogan and a 22-year-old woman were arrested at a Coal Point home after a stand-off with police early Monday morning.

It's alleged the sawn-off shotgun and a replica pistol were found following a search of the property

He's been charged with 11 offences including 3 counts of firing a firearm in a public place, possessing an unauthorised prohibited firearm and take and drive conveyance without consent of owner.

The woman's been charged with concealing a serious indictable offence and having goods in custody suspected of being stolen.

Man charged following crash in Tenambit

A man has been charged following a three-vehicle crash in Tenambit.

About 4.40pm yesterday, emergency services were called to Maize Street, Tenambit, following reports of a crash.

At the scene, police were told that a Ford Territory collided with a Toyota Landcruiser and Suzuki Baleno.

The drivers of the Toyota and Suzuki - a man and woman both aged 29 - were taken to the John Hunter Hospital for the treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The uninjured driver of the Ford, a 42-year-old man, was subject to a roadside breath test which allegedly returned a positive result.

He was arrested and taken to Maitland Police Station where he underwent a breath analysis, which allegedly returned a reading of 0.205.

He was charged with drive with high range PCA, and negligent driving.

He was granted strict conditional bail to appear before Maitland Local Court on Wednesday 24 July 2024.

Pursuit Ends With Arrest Of A Man At Tenambit

A man is due to face court today (Thursday 29 February, 2024) following the alleged theft of a car and police pursuit at Maitland.

Officers attempted to stop a stolen Toyota Hilux on Laurie Drive at Raworth.

As they approached the vehicle, the driver sped off and a pursuit was initiated.

It came to an end when the vehicle crashed into a fence on Korbel Street and the driver fled on foot.

The 22-year-old was arrested in O'Hearn Street at Tenambit a short time later with the help of PolAir and a police dog.

He's been refused bail to face Maitland Local Court today charged with 20 offences. 

Elderly Woman Saved By Working Smoke Alarms At Tenambit

An elderly woman is recovering from smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in the kitchen of her Tenambit home.

Fire crews arrived at the Valentia Parade home just before 2pm yesterday to find neighbours guiding the 80-year-old to safety.

They used an extinguisher to douse an oven fire.

The woman's daughter, who's a registered nurse, cared for her mother at the scene.

Fire crews say if it wasn't for working smoke alarms, the impact of the blaze could have been much greater.

Police launch appeal after suspicious Tenambit house fire

Police are appealing to the public for information after a house fire in Tenambit in August.

Emergency services attended the blaze on O'Hearne Street, around 12:15am on Tuesday 9 August.

The house was completely destroyed and two pet dogs also perished.

It's believed to be suspicious, with Fire and Rescue extinguishing another fire at the property just an hour beforehand.

Officers have established Strike Force Gilgundry to investigate the circumstances around the incident.

Anyone with information should contact Maitland Police or Crime Stoppers.

Pursuit And Attempted Double Carjacking At Maitland

A man is due to front court today following a pursuit and alleged attempted double carjacking in Maitland.

Police were called to brawl on O'Hearn Street at Tenambit around 11.30am on Monday where they were confronted by a man allegedly armed with a speargun.

He fled and led police on a pursuit, during which the man's car collided with a caged police vehicle.

Police say the man then attempted to carjack two vehicles in Melbourne Street, East Maitland while armed with a weapon.

The 36-year-old was arrested a short time later at a unit in Newcastle Street.

BREAKING! Firefighters Battle Two Deliberately Lit House Fires At Tenambit and Raymond Terrace

Firefighters have been kept busy overnight attending two deliberately lit house fires at Tenambit and Raymond Terrace.

Crews were called to a single level home in O'Hearn Street, Tenambit just after 9.30pm on Monday, having to force their way in to get to a fire which had been set inside the house.

They took about 45 minutes to douse flames.

Newcastle Fire Command says they were called back to the home just after midnight, where it's alleged someone had again set fire to the home.

They took more than 2 hours to extinguish the fire, which severely damaged the house.

Fire crews say it appears the occupants were not home and there were dogs in the back yard.

Meanwhile, fire has damaged a wall of a derelict house in Glenelg Street at Raymond Terrace.

Police say a garbage bin was placed against the outside wall and set alight jusy before 1.30am on Tuesday.

Fire crews from Raymond Terrace and Mayfield West took about 90 minutes to extinguish and mop up the fire.

Fire Brigade Issues Warning After House Fires At Valentine and Tenambit

Firefighters are ramping up the Keep Looking When Cooking message following separate house fires overnight.

Crews were called to a home on Valentine Crescent at Valentine at 5.15pm on Wednesday where food left cooking on a stove caught alight.

A 40-year-old man was treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation.

Then a 6.00pm, crews were called to a home on Burley Street at Tenambit where food left on a stove set the kitchen on fire.

Three children and an adult were treated for smoke inhalation while the fire caused damage to 25 per cent of the kitchen.

Newcastle Fire Command says residents should move outside as quickly as possible when a fire breaks out to avoid breathing toxic smoke.

Missing Man From Tenambit Found by Police

A man missing from the Hunter region has been located safe and well.

The man was located about 8.15am today.

The 62-year-old man was last seen at a BMX trail on Metford Road, Tenambit, on Monday, reported missing to police after he failed to return home that evening.

Police would like to thank members of the public and media for their assistance.

Good News!

A man reported missing from the Tenambit area overnight has been found safe and well.

62-year-old Stewart Murrell was last seen near the BMX trail on Metford Road on Monday afternoon.

Police have just advised, Stewart was found at about 8.15am this morning.

EARLIER:

Police are appealing for public assistance to locate a man who went missing from Tenambit on Monday afternoon.

Stewart Murrell, aged 62, was last seen at a BMX trail on Metford Road, Tenambit, at about 1.30pm yesterday, Monday 26th May.

Police were alerted when Stewart failed to return home by 5pm that day and officers from Port Stephens – Hunter Police District are conducting inquiries to locate him.

Serious concerns are held for his welfare, as he has a serious medical condition that requires treatment.

Stewart is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 180cm tall, of medium build with short brown hair that is greying on the side.

He was last seen wearing a black/grey zipped hoody, black t-shirt with ‘Calvin Klein’ logo on front, black jeans and a black woven jogger.

Anyone with information about Stewart’s whereabouts is urged to call Raymond Terrace Police Station on 02 4983 7599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police Officer Taken To Hospital After Allegedly Bitten by Man Near Maitland

A man will appear in court on Wednesday, after allegedly biting a police officer near Maitland yesterday.

About 3.45pm on Tuesday 19th May, officers stopped a man on Thursby Street, Tenambit, and observed him holding something in the front of his jumper.

When police asked him to show them what he was holding, the man was observed placing a small plastic bag into his mouth before chewing it, swallowing it and attempting to leave the scene.

The 38-year-old man was arrested when he allegedly became violent, resisting police and biting one Senior Constable on his right arm, who was taken to Maitland Hospital for treatment.

The man was taken to Maitland Police Station and charged with resisting or hindering a police officer in the execution of duty, two counts of resisting an officer in execution of duty, assaulting a police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, and not wearing an approved bicycle helmet/fitted/fastened.

He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court today.

Teens Arrested Over Pursuit At Tenambit

Two teenage boys have been arrested after going on a joy ride in a parent's car at Tenambit.

Police had just stopped a car on Metford Road at about 1.20am on Thursday when they noticed a Holden Commodore doing donuts in the dirt near the local pistol club.

The officers pursued the car for a short distance before the driver stopped.

Two 15-year-old old boys were in the vehicle.

They were arrested and taken to Maitland Police Station before being collected by their parents.

Police say the boys will be dealt with under the Young Offenders Act.

Police Investigate Suspicious Fires At Tenambit And Morpeth

Firefighters have been kept busy early Thursday morning with two suspicious fires at Tenambit and Morpeth.

Crews were called to a disused church on Collinson Street just before 3.30am to find a caravan parked next to the timber building well alight.

The caravan has been destroyed and the church sustained superficial damage.

Then, just after 4.30am, crews were called to an industrial bin fire about a block away in Kenneth Street behind the Morpeth Pie Shop.

It's taken about 20 minutes to extinguish - the fire was contained to the bin.

Police are investigating both fires.
