The University of Newcastle's Community Garden was visited by Gardening Australia's Costa Georgiadis, yesterday.
The famous gardener attended the Callaghan Campus to spread the word about the benefits of community gardening, how you can improve your garden at home and how to start living sustainably.
Costa demonstrated this to attendees by building a worm farm, which creates soft and healthy soil that can be used to improve the health of garden soils.
The presentation and initiative aim to inspire staff and students to get involved with gardening, recycling and composting in order to sustain the environment.
The garden is located on the University's Oval 4 behind the Wollotuka Institute and is home to a mix of seasonal fruits, vegetables and herbs.
The social space hosts two water tanks, compost bins, a solar pump and six raised garden beds.
All students and staff are encouraged to get involved with the garden through events such as working bees, clean-ups and planting days or by dropping past to water it.
