A low pressure system is forecast to bring much-needed rainfall to the Hunter, including drought-affected areas.
The weather bureau is forecasting a near 100 percent chance of rain today across the region, with areas such as Singleton and Scone likely to receive a soaking.
More rain is expected tomorrow and across the weekend, with the bureau predicting up to 85 millimetres in some areas over the next 3 days.
Phil Campbell from the SES says it's important to ensure children don't play in drain systems or floodwaters.
"Given there's school holidays over the course of this rain event, we are asking parents to make sure they keep their kids indoors during heavy rain to make sure they don't play in drains and water courses and to stay well clear of any floodwater," he said.
