Long-Serving Westpac Rescue Helicopter Crewman Hangs Up His Helmet

BY IAN CROUCH

The Hunter's Westpac Rescue Helicopter is bidding farewell to one of its favourite crew members today.

Graham Nickisson started as a volunteer trainee crewman in 1981 and became a full-time employee in 1989.

During his 7100 flying hours he's been involved with some of the region's most traumatic rescue missions, including the horrific Kempsey Bus Crash in 1989 which claimed 35 lives and left another 41 people injured.

The mission deeply traumatised the young Nicko, forcing him to quit the service.

However, the 54-year-old was lured back and is retiring today after 38 years in the role.
