The University of Newcastle is joining forces with the University of NSW, University of Wollongong and Western Sydney University to create a world-class higher education institute to be built in the Western Sydney Aerotropolis.
The four universities in conjunction with the NSW Government will create one campus in this new university, with a focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The NSW Government signed a Statement of Intent with the NUW Alliance of Universities to create the higher education precinct at Western Syndey Airport.
"Our students will be learning in an environment where industry and academia collide. That kind of experience is unique and sets them up for the global jobs environment," said Kevin Hall, Acting Vice-Chancellor and President of The University of Newcastle.
"Our researchers will have direct links with industry partners so we'll be solving real-world problems that can have an impact on a global scale."
As the first university to be built in Sydney in 50 years, Stage One is expected to be open by 2026, coinciding with the Western Sydney Airport becoming operational.
"The jobs of tomorrow will rely heavily on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, so I applaud this great initiative. It will ensure students in Western Sydney have even greater access to world-class higher education", Premier Gladys Berejiklian said of the initiative.
