The Future of Robot Jobs

BY TARA LOUIS

Roughly a third of jobs in the Hunter are likely to face big changes as the fate of automation and 'Robot Jobs' leers closer.

Careers facing the biggest disruption are those which undertake methodical and repetitive tasks such as sales, hospitality, clerks and accounting.

The towns predicted to be most affected are Cessnock, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Newcastle; with Newcastle facing an estimated 26 129 jobs listed as highly vulnerable.

Hunter Business Chamber chief executive, Bob Hawes, says the impact of technology can be quite significant.

"This 'disruption' as it might be called will also create other opportunities," he says.

Redeployment is likely to come as a result of the advancements but it may actually make our lives easier.

Bob Hawes says we need to "go with the change" and steps need to be taken in order to prepare our society for the unprecedented technological development.

"It is very important that we start provoking the education systems through schools and TAFE's and universities and even workplace education to make sure we are adapted and equipped for the change," Mr Hawes concludes.
