Mayfield West Community Centre Guttered

Hunter-based charity, The Samaritans is counting the cost of an early-morning fire which guttered their community centre at Mayfield West.

Firefighters from 6 stations and the Newcastle Hazmat unit arrived at the centre in Gregson Avenue just after 3.30am to find the 20 by 20 metre weatherboard building engulfed in flames.

The fire is being treated as suspicious and police have set up a crime scene.

 

20 young people with profound disabilties relied on the centre each week day, which provided a creative leisure activities program.

The Samaritans say they're looking for alternative accomodation for the program.
