Lake Macquarie man dies with COVID-19, as the Hunter records 65 new cases

BY JARROD MELMETH

A man from Lake Macquarie has died with COVID-19, as the Hunter records 65 new cases.

The man in his 80s died at home and becomes the regions seventh death since the current outbreak began on August 5.

The 65 new cases have been recorded across the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Cessnock, Maitland, Port Stephens, Muswellbrook, Singleton and Mid-Coast local government areas.

26 were infectious in the community, 40 are linked to current cases and 20 are being cared for in hospital, including one in intensive care.

Hunter New England Health have announced, from Tuesday 5 October, walk-in COVID testing for the public will no longer be available at the John Hunter Hospital and Calvary Mater at Waratah. This is due to the increasing number of positive cases in the community which health authorities say poses an additional risk at walk-in clinics. For those without vehicles, walk-in appointments will be accommodated at the already existing drive through clinics.
