Newcastle Council is celebrating the one year birthday of its digital library, boasting an attendance record of 59,000 visitors in just twelve months.
The facility, which is located within the new council administration centre on Stewart Avenue, opened in September 2020. Council says the library is an award-winning community and civic hub that has proved popular with local residents and city workers since it opened.
It features your typical collection of books, newspapers, magazines, CDs and DVD's as well as a podcast studio, an industrial 3D Printer, and a digital multimedia 'Magic Box, which provides access to the library's rare book collection.
Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes says COVID-19 has brought the need for digital skills into greater focus as parents and students work and learn from home.
"In this highly digital age it's more important than ever for our community to have access to the tools required to enhance their skills and equip themselves with a greater understanding of technology.
"The Digital Library offers a community-based, educational environment where physical collections are complemented by a diverse range of technology-based library experiences.
"The Digital Library is successfully helping people bridge the digital divide through a range of unique programs and services, which are improving digital literacy and promoting digital inclusion for people of all ages," Cr Nelmes said.
Due to COVID-19 restriction, Newcastle Libraries is currently closed but they are offering a delivery service which can be accessed on the library's website.
