Unusually high cancer rates among workers at Port Waratah Coal Services on Kooragang Island has prompted calls for a public health inquiry.
A study by the University Of Newcastle on the data of 900 workers between 1983 and 2006 found Kooragang Island employees were between 2 and 3 times more likely to be diagnosed with cancer compared to the rest of NSW and Australia.
The shock findings have prompted questions as to why this happening, with green groups calling for work on the the T4 coal terminal to be suspended until these questions are answered.
