A Maitland Rugby player is facing a life ban from the sport and two years behind bars after he allegedly assaulted a referee.
Mark Meafua is accused of striking the referee in the jaw during Saturday's Under 19's Grand Final at Newcastle's Number Two Sportsground after he was given a yellow card.
The 18-year-old left the ground before police arrived, however they caught up with him at his Rurtherford home later that night.
He's now been charged with common assault and has been granted bail to face Maitland Local Court on Wednesday October 4.
