Newcastle businesses will now be allowed to decide whether they trade on Boxing Day or not.
The decision to pass the legislation by the NSW government follows a two-year trial which enabled businesses outside the Sydney CBD to trade on 26th December and take advantage of the potential economic benefits of trading on Boxing Day.
CEO of the Hunter Business Chamber, Bob Hawes said they believe it is important the decision has been given to businesses.
"There is a lot of hype about Boxing Day, particularly surrounding the larger retailers who choose to commence their Christmas Sales on that day," he said.
Bob Hawes added it is an opportunity for local retailers, big and small to take advantage of the hype.
Retailers would be properly compensated for working on Boxing Day, with penalty rates pushing their pay to 250 percent of the normal rate. Employees won't be penalised if they choose not to work on the public holiday.
Bob Hawes said the decision can be seen as a win all round.
