Cessnock, Maitland & Singleton turn green

BY JARROD MELMETH

Cessnock, Maitland and Singleton have today joined the rest of the Hunter rolling out an organic waste bin to residences.

The first pick-up of green bins began today thanks to funding under the 'Waste Less Recycle More' program which saw the roll out of more than 55,000 bins across the three local government areas.

Cessnock Council Environment and Waste Manager Michael Alexander said the rollout will divert 20,000 tonnes of garden waste which normally ends up in landfill per year.

"The initial stage is for the garden organics which will then over time progress to include food organics and make a diversion of around 50 percent of what currently is going to landfill," Mr Alexander said.

Mr Alexander went on to say the organic waste will be recycled back into the community.

"The kerbside collection will occur on the opposite week of the yellow recycling service, it will then be audited in the first instance to make sure our education message with contamination has been taken up by the community and then the material will be bulk hauled to a processing plant at Tea Gardens," Mr Alexander said.
