By Marissa Alexiou

Sport NSW and Maitland City Council have come together to present Girls Get Active Day on Thursday 9th March to follow International Women's Day today.

The event will be hosted at Maitland Park Bowling and Sporting Complex and will involve four local high schools.

100 high school will have the opportunity to hear from a range of successful athletes as well as participate in sport and activities including football (soccer), athletics, rugby league, netball, Australian rules football, softball, basketball, yoga and karate.

The event provides the opportunity to participate in sport and physical activity, in turn promoting the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

Membership and Female Program Officer for Sport NSW Sophie Milton said casual recreation sport is becoming more popular amongst girls who do not wish to commit to a full season of sport.

Athletes attending on the day will include Maddison Elliot, Kylie Hilder, Kellyann Grayson, Lisa Steane, Lauren Colthorpe and Kate Jenner.

Milton said it is important for girls to have an outlet and this event provides a great opportunity for girls to see the options available to them.
