Crash investigators are looking into the circumstances leading up to a fatal collision at Ryhope.
A Toyota Camry and Hyundai Getz crashed head-on on Wakefield Road just before 7.30am on Sunday, trapping both drivers.
The male driver of the Hyundai died at the scene - the male driver of the Camry has been treated for leg injuries in the John Hunter Hospital and has undergone mandatory testing.
Investigators are looking into whether speed and fatigue were factors in the crash and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
