Police have now made an arrest following an alleged armed robbery at Mayfield West early Wednesday.
2NUR-FM News has been told a man wearing a blue cap approached the front door of the 7-11 outlet on the corner of Maitland Road and Frith Street just before 12.30 on Wednesday morning.
The male attendant asked him to remove the cap before letting him in - the man then allegedly produced a knife and ordered the attendant to empty the til.
The frightened worker retreated to a back office and the man fled on foot.
However, he returned when he saw the attendant return to the console and threatened the worker again before leaving empty-handed.
Patrolling police arrested a 30-year-old man in nearby Hanbury Street. They also seized a knife which has been taken for forensic examination.
The man, from Surry Hills, has been refused bail to front Newcastle Local Court today.
