Merriwa Meat Pie Smashes Through Stratosphere

CHELSEA EDWARDS

A meat pie has smashed through the stratosphere above Merriwa, breaking a world record for pie altitude.

The delicious pastry was taken nearly 30km above the earth by two weather balloons, named the pie floater and the flying saucer.

The 2018 NewSpace FlashBuild workshop, brought together teams of engineers, students, and business to prototype and deploy solutions to a range of mission-related challenges.

Entrepreneur in Residence for UNSW Alex Herlihy says the FlashBuild workshop was a great success in raising awareness for Australia's space technology.

"It's about getting the community together, collaborating and seeing what we can do. This is the first of many missions we hope to launch."

"To see government, academic research and business come together... was great, and we are very positive with the outcome. There is no longer pie in the sky."
