Police Lay Charges Over Alleged Assault Of Elderly Man Outside Mayfield Cafe

A man has been charged over the alleged assault of another man outside a café in Newcastle earlier this month.

Police commenced an investigation on Tuesday 12 August 2025, following reports an 80-year-old man was assaulted outside a café on Maitland Road, Mayfield, about 2.45pm on Sunday 10 August 2025.

The 80-year-old man was uninjured.

Following inquiries, on Tuesday 19 August 2025, a 39-year-old man was issued a Field Court Attendance Notice for common assault.

He is due to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 2 October 2025.

Mayfield Fast Food Store Held Up At Gunpoint

A search is under way for two men over an armed robbery at Mayfield overnight.

Police say the pair walked into a fast-food store on Maitland Road just after 11.30 and threatened staff with a firearm while demanding money.

The pair took cash before running off.

Police have set up a crime scene as investigations continue.

Young Boy Allegedly Holds Up Mayfield Service Station

A boy as young as 10-years-old is believed responsible for a brazen armed robbery at Mayfield overnight.

Police say the boy walked into the Coles Express on Maitland Road just before 9.00pm on Wednesday and threatened the attendant with a knife before escaping with two cartons of milk.

The worker was unharmed and police are reviewing CCTV footage in a bid to identify the alleged culprit.

$115m Renewables Storage Hub Earmarked For Former BHP Land At Mayfield

Former BHP Steelworks land at Mayfield is being earmarked for development into a logistics precinct.

This month's state budget will include $115 million towards the construction of the precinct on 52 hectares of former BHP Intertrade land adjacent to Industrial Drive.

It will become a storage hub for renewables infrastructure such as wind turbines and transformers before they are transported to energy projects across the state's north west including the Hunter Transmission Project and the Hunter Central Coast REZ.

Minister for Energy and Climate Change, Penny Sharpe will announce the project in Newcastle today (Thursday 12 June, 2025).

MAYFIELD - Appeal for Information Following Bullet Damage to Home

 Police are appealing for information after a firearm was discharged during a home invasion at Mayfield last week.

Just before 4am on Friday police were called to Bull Street following reports a gunshot had been heard, no one was hurt.

Newcastle City police attended and established a crime scene which was forensically examined. Damage to the front door resembling a bullet was identified.

A further search of the property revealed an unspent bullet, a knife and knuckledusters.

As inquiries continue, anyone with information’s being asked to come forward.

Newcastle Acting Superintendent Steve Benson says police are working to remove any further threat.

“While we do believe it is targeted, we want to ensure the community we are taking this investigation extremely seriously.

“Any crime involving the use of prohibited weapons is an ongoing focus for us,” he said.
