Newcastle Mountain Climber Dies In Freak Himalayan Accident

BY IAN CROUCH

A Newcastle mountaineer has died in a freak accident in the Himalayas.

Michael Davis from Wallsend was descending a peak near Mount Everest when falling rocks severed his climbing ropes, causing him to fall to his death.

It was the 33-year-old's first trip to the world's highest mountain, although he'd earlier climbed two other peaks as part of a five-week expedition.

His brother and parents are flying out to Nepal today to bring his body back home.
