The Greens candidate for the Federal seat of Newcastle has been announced today.
Councillor at City of Newcastle Dr John Mackenzie is launching his campaign for the position.
"I'm really looking forward to showing the people of Newcastle what a progressive voice would do for the city of Newcastle," Dr Mackenzie said.
Dr Mackenzie previously contested for the seat of Newcastle in 2016.
The Greens member has a strong focus on building the city's renewable energy future.
"My main focus will be on a renewable energy economy for Newcastle, making sure we get the benefit of the energy transition that Australia's currently going through," Dr Mackenzie said.
Dr Mackenzie will make affordable housing a key focus for his candidacy, looking forward to younger generations who are struggling to enter the housing market.
"I want to see a much greater focus on affordable housing in Newcastle and that means a fairly radical approach to public housing but it will also make housing more affordable to an entire generation which has been more or less locked out of the housing market."
The Councillor will also tighten the laws around offshore mining on our coasts to ensure they are sustained.
"I want to see greater protection for our coastline and I'm going to make sure our precious coastline is preserved forever."
