UPDATE 10am:
Police have released details about a fatal crash on the M1 this morning which saw the Motorway closed for eight hours.
They say around 4:30 this morning, a sedan travelling northbound in the southbound lane collided with a utility near the Sparks Road off-ramp.
The 72-year-old man driving the sedan died at the scene, while a 26-year-old passenger in the utility was treated at the scene for minor injuries and has been taken to Gosford Hospital, where he's undergoing mandatory blood and urine testing.
A crime scene has been established, with a report to be prepared for the coroner.
Traffic remains heavy along the M1 in a southbound direction.
EARLIER:
There are major delays for southbound traffic on the M1 following a serious accident at Warnervale.
Details are yet to be confirmed but it's believed a 60-year-old man has driven his car the wrong way along the southern exit ramp at Sparks Road at about 4.45am today and collided head-on with another vehicle.
Despite the best efforts of emergency services, the man sadly died at the scene.
NSW Ambulance says two other people have been injured.
The southbound lanes of the motorway are closed and traffic is being diverted onto Sparks Road.
Meanwhile, a woman has escaped with only minor injuries after a bad crash at Mount Hutton this morning.
Police say the woman was driving along Warners Bay Road at about 4.40am when she fell asleep at the wheel and her car overturned.
She's been freed from the vehicle and taken to the John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.
