Six Hunter Schools Receive Boost To School Zone Safety

BY OLIVIA WILSON-WHEELER

Six schools in the Hunter have received better pedestrian facilities as part of an initiative to boost school zone safety.

Adamstown, Carrington, Wallsend South, The Junction, Newcastle East Public Schools and Newcastle Waldorf School all received upgrades as part of the $10m program.

Upgrades included raised crossings, kerb extensions, lighting works and bus stop works.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald today announced the funding, "we all have a role to play when it comes to pedestrian safety, particularly when it comes to the safety around schools."

"Roads and children can be a dangerous mix, which is why we are investing in making school zones as safe as possible to reduce the risk of tragedy."

So far this year 41 pedestrians have died in NSW, 12 more than the same time last year, and Mr MacDonald urges us not to be complacent.
