Spike in Hunter Bankruptcy

Personal Bankruptcy is on the rise in the Hunter, with the latest quarterly figures revealing a 5.6% annual increase.

The Australian Financial Security Authority found over 2, 000 individual insolvencies across NSW.

It's been revealed Newcastle has one of the highest rates of financial strain in the state, with 37 per 1, 000 people in debt.

The data also shows people under the age of 40 account for more than 35% of insolvencies.

It's reported personal bankruptcies are continuing to rise, now escalating higher than population growth for the third year in a row.
