BY IAN CROUCH

An international student at the University of  Newcastle will need surgery to repair a broken nose after being savagely bashed on campus.

20-year-old Abdullah Qaiser from Pakistan was driving on Ring Road at Callaghan at about 8.30 on Saturday night when his car was surrounded by a group of people.

One man opened the driver's side door and repeatedly rammed a knuckle duster in Mr Qaiser's face while a woman stole his mobile phone.

University staff have handed over CCTV footage of the incident to police and security patrols have been stepped up on campus.
