Rent Program to Combat Homelessness

BY TARA LOUIS

Newcastle and Lake Macquarie will be trialled for a rent assistance program for people facing financial strain.

Rent Choice Assist will allow tenants to seek job and study opportunities without losing their home.

Tenants in the private rental market who are struggling to pay their rent will be offered a new rental subsidy that could provide up to three years of assistance.

"Unforeseen events such as illness or retrenchment can put people at risk of homelessness but Rent Choice Assist can support them while they get back on their feet," says Ms Goward.

The State government-funded program is part of a $1 billion plan to improve homelessness services over the next four years.
