Coeliac Disease vs Wheat Sensitivity: Newcastle Uni

BY TARA LOUIS

A Newcastle University study into Coeliac disease has revealed 14% of Australians claim to have sensitivities to gluten, but only 1% have been formally diagnosed.

The researchers are urging anyone with uncomfortable symptoms to talk to their doctor about the difference between wheat sensitivity and gluten intolerance.

They have now published their findings in the international medical journal called Gut.

Professor Marjorie Walker is on the team alongside Laureate Professor Nick Talley, and she says many people are taking unnecessary steps to re-jig their diet, leading to negative effects.

"People sometimes are now saying, I'm not really gluten free I won't be totally scrupulous... those people are not coeliac, and [this] can cause damage to the real coeliac patients if they do get a bit of gluten in their food," says Professor Walker.
