Maitland woman charged over social media threats against senator

BY DAKOTA TAIT

A Maitland woman and a man from Harrington Park in Sydney's west have been charged and served court attendance notices, after threats were made against an Australian senator on a social media messaging service.

Officers with the Australian Federal Police executed search warrants at both individual's properties today, seizing a mobile phone from the 29-year-old man's home.

It's alleged the man and woman were responsible for sending two separate threatening messages on 21 and 22 November 2021 which threatened or advocated violent acts.

The man has been charged with threatening to cause harm to a Commonwealth public official and faces a maximum penalty of seven years in jail.

The 41-year-old Hunter woman has been charged with using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence, with a maximum penalty of five years in jail.

The identity of the senator in question has not been revealed.

They're expected to face Sydney Central Local Court next month.
