Brucella suis detected in feral pig in the Upper Hunter

BY DAKOTA TAIT

The Brucella suis infection has been detected in the Hunter for the very first time.

A feral pig caught at Cassilis has tested positive for the bacteria, prompting property owners and pig hunters to be on alert.

The feral pig population in Queensland and north-western parts of NSW is known to have the infection, but it's never been recorded in our region before.

It usually causes reproductive disease in pigs, but humans and dogs can also catch the disease through contact with infected blood and tissue.

Brucellosis can be serious and fatal for people, and we're being urged take the threat seriously.
