Work on the new $25 Million Honeysuckle Campus of the University of Newcastle, is expected to begin in April after Hansen Yuncken were awarded the building contract, the same company which constructed the NeW Space precinct in 2015.
The new Integrated Innovation Network (I2N) Hub will be the home of the Creative Industries Faculty of the University.
Vice Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky says, "the co-location of the Innovation hub with the school of Creative Industries on our Honeysuckle City Campus will be dedicated space for students, academics, researchers and entrepreneurs to work alongside industry."
"The University of Newcastle wants the whole community - students, neighbours and regions to take advantage of the opportunities this building will present."
Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes says, "this investment in the urban renewal of the inner city is exceptionally important and is part of a very long term strategy to bring people and students back into the city."
In response to parking concerns Professor Zelinsky says, "nevertheless it is really a city campus it's not like our Callaghan campuses where we provide extensive parking."
"We've got a great new tram here and we've got a great shuttle service between the two campuses so we're encouraging people to use public transport or use a bicycle."
The State Government has funded $4.8 million towards this first stage of the project which is set to finish mid 2021.
