Labor Lord Mayor Warms To Affordable Housing Quotas

BY IAN CROUCH

Newcastle Lord Mayor, Nuatali Nelmes has adopted her State Labor colleague's commitment on affordable housing quotas.

She says under a Labor-controlled council, 15 per cent of developments on private land and 25 per cent on state land would be used for affordable housing.

However, Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald says council should've already moved ahead with the state government's offer to provide 30 affordable housing units on Merewether Street.

"So, we've got the Labor leader in Macquarie Street, Luke Foley saying we are dedicated to affordable housing and yet when they had the opportunity to here to pit it into practice with a $7million leg-up, it was immediately put on hold, and so that is not what I want to see from the council going forward," he said.
