Newcastle bar set to change name after trademark dispute

BY JORDAN REGNIS

Newcastle bar and restaurant Babylon is set to be rebranded, after a dispute with a Brisbane hospitality operator.

A trademark infringement was lodged by the Mantle Hospitality Group in Brisbane in May last year, though the Elsey family has been operating under the brand in Newcastle since 2018.

The family initially challenged the claim, arguing the two venues held significant differences, and the Newcastle venue also being open for longer, but found the legal costs were too high to risk taking the challenge further.

The business is set to transition its name to Bartholomew over the coming months.
