The Hunter Street Mall construction has commenced, with the first stage of works expected to be complete by 2020.
Chief Executive of developer Iris Capital, Sam Arnaout and Newcastle Lord Mayor, Nuatali Nelmes welcomed the beginning of works, turning the sod yesterday afternoon.
The $750 million development will include a basement car park for 295 spaces as well as an open piazza and a pedestrian link from Perkins to Wolfe Street.
Construction Company, Iris Capital and Newcastle City Council have addressed community concerns over disruptions, saying they are working with Novocastrians to reduce disruptions where possible.
Lord Mayor, Nuatali Nelmes said it represents short term pain for long time gain.
“I think the works going on around the city are just another symbol of Newcastle growing and changing and becoming a place where people really want to live and work,” the Lord Mayor said.
Ms Nelmes said those experiencing traffic disruptions should take advantage of the Park and Ride shuttle bus service departing McDonald Jones’ Stadium at Broadmeadow.
“People who are using the Park and Ride service who live in the city can manage their payments on Council’s new Easypark App, which is also really exciting.”
