Residents Up In Arms Over Proposed Nelson Bay Building Height Limits

BY IAN CROUCH and LAUREN FREEMANTLE

The Tomaree Ratepayers Association is leading the fight against a Port Stephens Council plan to increase building height limits in the Nelson Bay CBD.

Council wants to more than double the height limits, arguing it would be a massive boost for tourism.

However, Association President, Geoffrey Washington said Nelson Bay doesn't need or want high rise tourism developments, saying visitors come to the area for the coastal village atmosphere of the bay.

"A key characteristic of Nelson Bay is that it provides the ambience of a relaxed coastal town, and this characteristic attracts tourists and residents who are seeking an experience that's different from Australia's big cities."

Tonight's meeting starts from 7pm at the Nelson Bay Bowling Club.
