Newcastle Police suspect an early morning bush fire at Merewether Heights was deliberately lit.
Firefighters from Merewether Fire Station were called to an area of bush alight on Gun Club Road just before 6.00am on Sunday.
They took about an hour to extinguish the blaze.
Newcastle Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
