Bridge work is getting under way as construction of the final stage of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass ramps up.
Bridge piling work has begun for the construction of six bridges, with drill holes expected to be more than a kilometre deep.
Meanwhile work is also under way on the archaeological salvage of the so-called Hollywood camp shanty town which housed scores of homeless people during the Great Depression.
A host of artefacts have been unearthed from the site which will be preserved for a future display.
The bypass is due for completion in 2025.
