Investigations are continuing after an elderly woman was seriously injured at her Nelson Bay home.
Emergency services were called to the Armidale Avenue residence at about 6.30pm on Wednesday after reports a 71-year-old woman and a 74-year-old man were involved in a domestic-related altercation.
The woman was taken to Tomaree Hospital before being transferred to the John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.
Detectives have commenced an investigation and no arrests have been made at this stage, although the man is assisting with their inquiries.
