Towering Trees Lopped At The Hill After Contractor Causes Root Damage

BY IAN CROUCH

Newcastle Council has been forced to engage an arborist to lop two towering Norfolk Island Pine trees at The Hill after a sub-contractor cut their roots while laying cables.

Residents living near the Anzac Memorial Walkway are up in arms over the loss of the trees, however council says it was left with no choice because the  14 metre high pines were in danger of collapsing.

Telecommunications provider TPG has apologised saying its contractor has failed to comply with local requirements.

Council will seek to recover costs associated with removal and replacement of the trees.
The Friends of King Edward Park have called for an investigation into the loss of the trees.
