Hundreds of people have reported feeling the ground shift beneath them at Muswellbrook.
A 3.9 magnitude quake struck at about 3.48am on Sunday at Edderton, 17 kilometres south of the town.
Geoscience Australia data shows the quake occurred close to the earth's surface, meaning it could easily be felt by surrounding residents.
288 people submitted a "felt report" to the government agency.
There are no reports of damage.
