A Supercars race in Newcastle appears unlikely to go ahead this year, with the focus now shifting to 2023.
The Newcastle 500 was initially scheduled to go ahead in March, but this was postponed due to the region's Omicron outbreak.
Plans were under way to stage the race between May 20 and 22, but this was also called off after Supercars wanted to consult with its board on a new date
Newcastle Council CEO, Jeremy Bath says given the substantial lead time required, holding the race in May or June is off the table.
With this year's Supercars calendar already full, it's reported talks are under way to host the opening event in Newcastle in March next year.
