Hunter Fireys Celebrated on International Firefighters Day

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) has recognised 44 firefighters across the state for the courage and commitment shown for International Day of Firefighters, also known as St Florian's Day.

Six firefighters from the Newcastle and Lambton fire stations, have been awarded Commendations for Meritorious for their courage during a rescue at Nobby's Beach break-wall. 

The incident took place on May 31st 2021, when a passer-by heard a man screaming for help who had been knocked over the break wall into the massive swells and was disappearing behind the waves. 

One of the firefighters jumped in the water to shield the victim who was stuck in a rock formation.  

An additional FRNSW team arrived and both men recovered from the water. 

The victim suffered a collapsed lung. broken ribs, back injuries, cuts and abrasions. 

Two responding lifeguards and the passer-by have also received Commissioner's Commendation Certificates and letters of appreciation.
