Jobs Bounce Back In The Hunter After COVID Crash
BY IAN CROUCH
The latest jobs figures for the Hunter show a continuing improvement in the unemployment rate since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The jobless rate in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie fell by 1.4per cent in December to 7 per cent, down from a peak of 11 per cent in June with around 20,000 jobs recovered since then.
Across the Hunter, the rate fell from 6.5 per cent in November to 5.9 per cent.
The best news is in the youth unemployment rate, which has fallen significantly from 16.1 per cent to 6.3.
Hunter Business Chamber CEO, Bob Hawes says the figures suggest many of the jobs lost up until June last year have largely been recovered, but some sectors of the region's economy are still feeling the pinch.
"While the labour force figures point to a sharp recovery, the economy remains fragile, with certain sectors still disproportionately affected, including entertainment, travel and businesses that rely on international patronage," he said.

New Data Reveals Hunter and Regional NSW to Have Most Affordable Public Education
BY DAKOTA TAIT
New data has revealed the Hunter and Regional NSW have some of the most affordable public education options in the entire country.
The report, compiled by Futurity Investment Group, found the average cost of 13 years of public schooling to come in at $58,227 in the regions, compared to $90,122 in Sydney.
Private education in Sydney came in at $448,035, while Regional NSW was 70 percent cheaper, at just $133,920.
School fees made up a larger proportion of the cost of an Independent education compared to a Government one, while parents of public schoolers put larger fractions of the cost toward school camps, textbooks, uniforms, and transport.
Parents are also estimated to have spent an extra $808 per child last year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Futurity Group Executive Kate Hill said the cost of education has risen at more than double the rate of inflation over the past decade.
“Education costs, including outside tuition, school camps and sports equipment and electronic devices are demanding a far greater share of the family budget than in the past,” Ms Hill said.
“COVID-19 has only exacerbated this financial challenge, with parents required to spend hundreds of dollars extra on unplanned education related expenses at the height of the pandemic."
75 percent of Independent school parents found they were satisfied with their child's schooling during the pandemic, compared to only 62 percent of Government school parents.
Ms Hill said parents who lacked the ability to save in the past would suffer difficult education costs in the future.
“More than ever, the costs associated with education are placing more of a burden on Australian families, who are already stretched by the rising cost of living and stagnant wage growth."

BY ISABEL EVERETT
A Two-year-old golden retriever has become Newcastle Council's newest recruit, aiming to educate the community about responsible pet ownership.
Bella has been joining the Rangers for patrols along Bathers Way between Merewether and Bar beaches, and Lambton Park.
She's also visited the popular fenced off-leash dog park at Acacia Avenue Reserve, North Lambton, which was opened in 2019 following community feedback.
“During these patrols Rangers engage with dog owners to educate people about being responsible pet owners.
“When Bella’s with us during patrols we’ve found people are more willing to engage and have a conversation with the Ranger team.”
Newcastle has one of the highest rates of dog ownership in the State, with more than 44,300 registered canines calling the local government area home.
Lord
Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the City’s Dogs in Open Space Plan will guide the management of dog off-leash areas during the next 10
years.
“We know that dog owners want suitable spaces to exercise their dogs safely, and work is underway to progress the development of strategically located fenced dog parks such as our Acacia Avenue facility,” Cr Nelmes said.
When
Bella’s not on official duty she spends her down time with her owner and
colleague Allan, who has been working with the Ranger team for the past nine
months.
Lauren said Bella’s
trial with the team had been such a success they were looking at making her an
official Ranger later this month and were currently finalising her position
description and calculating how many dog biscuits per hour her role would
entail.

BY ISABEL EVERETT
Plans to remediate a former hydro aluminum smelter site at Kurri Kurri in order to create a new commercial and industrial precinct have been approved by the NSW Government.
Along side the precinct, half of the 2 thousand hectare site will be set aside for environmental conservation, while 80 hectares will be used as a containment cell for contaminated materials.
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes said the approval had the potential to create thousands of new jobs for the region.
“Its proximity to the Hunter Expressway makes it ideal for a new commercial and industrial precinct and we look forward to working with the landowner and councils to develop a masterplan for the site.
Minister for Water, Property and Housing Melinda Pavey said the NSW
Government had also agreed to take on the ongoing management of the containment
cell once all the remediation works have been completed and certified.
“This agreement is crucial to the site’s remediation and future
redevelopment,” Mrs Pavey said.

so we can unlock the potential of the site for business and the people of the

"Tram As Hard to Stop As Herd of 30 Rhinos" Newcastle Transport says in New Safety Campaign
BY JENAE MADDEN
Novocastrians mindlessly cutting across tram lines might want to double check next time they cross.
According to Newcastle Transport operator Keolis Downer, a collision with the Newcastle Tram has the same impact as a herd of 30 charging rhinos.
Newcastle Transport's is trying to raise awareness about the often underestimated danger of the Newcastle light rail as it approaches its second anniversary.
They say there are daily close calls on the network with motorists running red lights and pedestrians stepping out in front of trams.
According to Newcastle Transport General Manager, Mark Dunlop, over the last two years, the emergency brake has had to be used at least once every week to avoid harmful collisions.
“The rhino is a unique way to create a clear image in people’s minds of the size and danger posed by a tram," Dunlop says.
“Similar to a herd of charging rhinos, trams can’t divert from the tracks to avoid an obstacle and it takes time to stop because of the weight.”
Dunlop went onto say that the drivers operating the trams are doing their best to anticipate dangers but it is up to pedestrians, drivers and cyclists to step up and be vigilant around the light rail.
“Simply, one moment or mistake could be a life changing event for everyone involved."

Four Men Rescued From Waters North Of Nelson Bay After Boat Sinks
BY ISABEL EVERETT
Four men have been rescued from waters North of Nelson Bay after their boat sank off Broughton Island.
At around 7.20am on Monday morning the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by the AMSAR (Australian Maritime Safety Authority) following the activation of an emergency distress.
The four people on the stricken boat set off a flare, alerting a fisher on a nearby recreational vessel who was able to get to the scene quickly to pull all four people to safety.
The three men in their 20's and a man in his 40's were assessed by the Helicopter Critical Care Medical Team and they were conveyed back to Nelson Bay in a stable condition by Volunteer Marine Rescue.
‘Because the vessel owner had done all the right things—registered the EPIRB, told his emergency contact where they were going and when they were expected back home—we were able to initiate a rescue quickly, knowing what we were dealing with," AMSA Response Centre (ARC) Duty Manager Joseph Zeller said.
The owner of the stricken vessel
had all the right emergency equipment and knew how to use it.
‘Setting off the flare resulted
in a rescue soon after their vessel capsized, which meant that when rescue authorities
arrived on scene, the four people were out of immediate danger,’ Joseph said.
‘We can’t stress enough the importance of having your safety equipment in order. This rescue is a good example of how smoothly rescue authorities and others around you can respond when you have the right equipment, it’s accessible in the event of an emergency, and you know how to use it.’
Broughton Island is an island 14 km north-east of Port Stephens.
