Central Newcastle rugby league club is rallying to support Joel Dark and his family after the 21-year-old collapsed while making his first grade debut on Sunday.
The 21-year-old has undergone emergency brain surgery and remains in a critical condition in the John Hunter Hospital.
Club officials have issued a statement saying Joel is fighting hard and counselling is being offered to his team mates.
The NSW Rugby League says the young player suffered a head knock 15 minutes into the second half against Nelson Bay and an investigation is under way.
Joel's cousin - NRL star Boyd Cordner was granted permission to leave the Roosters bubble to travel to Newcastle to support Joel's family.
A Go Fund Me page set up to cover Joel's ongoing medical treatment and recovery costs has raised in excess of $62,000.
