Community Invited to Have Their Say on the Future of Gregson Park

BY DAKOTA TAIT

Hamilton locals are being invited to share memories and stories and have their say on the City of Newcastle's vision for the suburb's historic Gregson Park.

The City of Newcastle has launched an online survey and digital mapping tool where residents can hop online to share their input for the Council's upcoming draft masterplan.

Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said Gregson Park was an "iconic" part of Hamilton which needed to be preserved in a way that was fair to the site's rich past.

“Gregson Park is steeped in history, so we want to ensure that as we plan for its future, we consider its past and pay tribute to the heritage of the site,” Cr Nelmes said.

The draft masterplan will consider the park's potential for events and activities, playgrounds and amenities, and ideas for facilities such as the former bowling club site in the context of a heritage interpretation.

Chairperson of the Community and Culture Advisory Committee, Councillor Carol Duncan says focusing on Gregson Park and Hamilton's green spaces would help the Council deliver the suburb a future it deserved.

"Engagement with the community is incredibly important because they're the people who live around the park, they use the park, they raise their families in the park," Cr Duncan said.

"It really is their vision that we need to understand the best possible outcomes from a new masterplan to take this beautiful Victorian heritage park into its next century."

Community engagement is open until September 30 at newcastle.nsw.gov.au/gregsonpark.
